Willem van Swanenburg
Judas Iscarioth after Abraham Bloemaert (1564/66-1651), orig. published in 1611

About the Item

Judas Iscarioth - Judas hangs himself Engraved and published by Willem van Swanenburg (Dutch, 1580 - 1612) after designs by Abraham Bloemaert (1564/66-1651). • Copperplate engraving on laid paper, ca. 27 x 17 cm (Trimmed just within the plate mark) • No bothersome stains or damages • Some old, professionally done restoration to the bottom left corner and upper area where the tree ends is thinned out Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. This print is one of six depictions of three philosophically, theologically and artistically matched pairs of repentant saintly figures; St. Peter versus St. Paul, Zachaeus versus Mary Magdalen and King Saul versus Judas Iscariot which of course is the sheet we have here. The print was originally published in 1611 – This example is a later, unresearched edition probably dating to the 18thC. Nevertheless, having been engraved in the 17thC, the image of course oozes that monumental, yet elegant imagery so typical to that period, which even makes a suicide scene look alluring. Inscribed above the image: '' A Bloemaert Inventor / W. Swanenb. Sculpt et excud. 1611 '' and below the image the lines in latin by C. Plempius and Petrus Scriverious: '' Iamdudum temerasse Deum, nummosq[_] recepse Poenitet. Heu! Sero me metanoea coguit. Prodebam Dominum, et perdebam me inscius, eheu! Quid faciam? Collo culpa luenda meo est. Dixit, et informi clusit sibi guttural nodo, Et Judas ramis triste pependit onus. IUDAS ISCARIOTH '' (Having long since feared God, he received the money He repents. Alas! He forced me to be late. I was betraying the Lord and destroying myself unconsciously, alas! What should I do? It's my neck to play with. He said, and closed his guttural knot unformed, And Judas sadly hung his burden on the branches. JUDAS ISCARIOT) I am Adrian Stuart Grond trading as ASGrond - Art & Antiques.
