Notes: Published by Atelier Arcay. JEAN PIERRE VASARELY (YVARAL) (1934-2002) Born in Paris in 1934, he was the son of the highly acclaimed Kinetic artist Victor Vasarely. Although Yvaral’s family name was Vasarely, during his life he came to be known as Jean-Pierre Yvaral. Yvaral studied graphic art at the School of Applied Art in Paris where he began experimenting with geometrical abstract art and made his first completed works with the movement in 1955. By the end of the 1960s he was making many paintings and screen prints with vigorous color interactions and geometrical compositions. His work focused on producing optical effects that suggested movement, projection and recession. In the mid-1970s, Yvaral learned to use computers to achieve a subtle, almost mathematical programming of the pictorial surface. He created computer-aided paintings based on digital analysis where the image is broken up into measurable elements. This lead to his series of portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dali and Mona Lisa. Yvaral did not intend to pay homage to any of these figures, but chose them because they were instantly recognizable to the collective public conscious. Yvaral died in Paris in 2002 leaving behind a large collection of his digitized, kinetic paintings which pay homage to his search for a language of geometric simplicity.
