About the Item

Early 20th century signed dry point etching by Axel Herman Haig (1835-1921) depicting the interior of Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco, or St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy. The detailed scene shows congregants and worshipers beneath the soaring vaulted ceilings highlighted by a rose window. First published in London by Robt. Dunthorne in 1911. An architectural watercolorist and etcher, Haig found employment with noted Gothic Revival architecture William Burges, becoming one of the most noted architectural draughtsman in Britain and one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. The majority of his over four hundred etchings depict castles, towers and cathedrals in both England and on the Continent. Many of his prints are in the collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. Dimensions listed is paper size; image dimensions are 17.25 x 22.25
