Looking through my stock, buyers will notice my liking of female artistes working in Switzerland and here I introduce you to another important heroine of Swiss artistes and present a sweet little Swiss School orientalist pre-war etching. Commercially Marguerite Frey’s art seemed to be shadowed by the huge output the sought after of her husband Victor Surbek. However I have noticed say over the last decade, that her work is now being rediscovered and rightly so, re-appreciated. Consequently I have seen her prices rise slowly but steadily of the last years. Marguerite Frey was the daughter of forest manager Jean-Albert Frey and his wife Lisa Juliette. During the early years of her life, Frey grew up in Delémont until the family moved to Bern in 1893. She later attended the art school here for two years and was a private student of Paul Klee from 1904 to 1906. On Klee's advice, she studied at the Académie Ranson from 1906 to 1911 with Lucien Simon, Félix Vallotton, Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard, where she met her future husband Victor Surbek. After marrying in 1914, the couple ran a painting school in Bern from 1915 to 1931, where Serge Brignoni, Max Böhlen and Ernst Braker, among others, were taught. In Bern she created frescoes in the stairwell of the Bern trades school. Initially, Frey-Surbek mainly painted portraits, later landscapes and still lifes. In spring and summer she mostly worked in Iseltwald on the Lake of Brienz, and during the rest of the year in Bern. She traveled frequently and stayed in other European countries, north Africa and America for long periods of time. She was strongly influenced by her stay in Calabria in 1932, which allowed her to find new color tones. Frey-Surbek was socially and politically engaged. She founded the first day care center for girls in Bern, helped in refugee camps during the war, fought for women's suffrage, for the protection of Bern's old town and the preservation of the landscape arround the Lake of Brienz. From 1942 to 1948 she was a member of the Federal Art Commission (EKK) and a member of the Berne section of the Swiss Society of Female Artists (SGBK). • Beautiful Bath , No. 23 1996 by Karl Gerich of Bath - Playing Card Proof Print
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Karl Alexander Gerich (English, 23.4.1956 - 4.1.2016) Beautiful Bath, No. 23, 1996 - Etching - Sheet ca. 44.5 x 32.3 cm - Plate ca. 30.1 x 19.9 cm Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. This pack is said to be Karl’s declaration of love to his chosen city of Bath. Each card narrates a part of Bath’s rich history. The court cards depict portraits of personalities – real and legendary – who shaped the city of Bath as it is today. Unfinished, proof print with depictions of the court cards of hearts and spades, but an empty cartouche where the title card will appear at a later state. On one of the documenting photos you can see a photo copy of what the title card would look like. Sheet is in good condition and suitable to be framed. Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know. He could do it all: Come up with the tale, weave meaning(s) into it, fill it with spirited characters of his liking, draw it, etch it, print it, colour it and handcraft the inks, paper and card into wondersome packs of playing cards, each of them living in their own, most exquisitely crafted boxes. Every pack a magical marvel, filled with the spirit of this genius card maker … All this he did using his Adana printing press, very simple hand tools and great skill. When Karl closed down his studio in St.Peter’s Terrace in Bath, England and moved to Poplar Close, he sold off work for which he felt he no longer wanted to be the custodian. So a number of prints reached the market then. Printed sheets by Karl Gerich...
