About the Item
The Norfolk Broads [2022]
This print was created as a commission for the Norfolk Broads Authority to feature on the cover of their 2022 Guide. I was asked to create a print that showcases the rare species that are indigenous to the Norfolk Broads. The print features the flowers Hemp Agrimony, Yellow Pond Lily, Branched Burr Reed and Milk Parsley. The caterpillar of the Swallowtail Butterfly can be seen on the Milk Parsley and the Norfolk Hawker dragonfly is perched on the reed. A garden Tiger moth is in flight and a Red Admiral butterfly is feeding on the pink flowers of the Hemp Agrimony. A Great crested Grebe can be seen in the water. A Linocut Print is a relief printing technique where linoleum is cut, inked and rolled to create an inverse relief print, generating the image as seen. This print is made from multiple lino tiles and is printed by hand in my studio in Hertfordshire.

Kate Heiss is a textile designer and print-maker who has worked with a wide range of fashion brands including Fenchurch, Miss Selfridge and the Japanese fashion designer Michiko Koshino. Then in 2011 Kate set up her own printmaking studio. Her approach to design and printmaking stems from a love of florals, geometric patterns and bold colours often found in textiles. Much of her inspiration comes from the natural landscapes of East Anglia. Discover works by Jennifer Jokhoo online and in our Deddington art gallery. Originally from New Zealand, Printmaker, Painter Jennifer Jokhoo works from her home studio in the Surrey Hills. She studied Fine Art and majored in Painting/Printmaking at Canterbury University School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 1998 she went on to complete a Diploma in Secondary Teaching. Since qualifying she has followed a career in Art education and has taught in New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. In 2012 she was elected a member of Greenwich printmakers association. Then in May 2016, she was elected an associate member of the Society of Graphic and Fine Arts and received the ‘Associate’s award’ for her print ‘Summer Harvest’ at the Draw 2017 exhibition. Her work is exhibited widely across the South East in many galleries and is held in private collections in the UK, New Zealand, Mauritius, Australia, USA and Canada. Upon moving to the Surrey hills in 2014, Jennifer’s interest shifted from architectural landscapes, to areas that are closer to home. Hillside views, fields, wide skies and horizontal bands are elements that are visited and revisited in her Reduction linocut prints. The creative process requires intricate cutting and layering of colour which takes place over many weeks. Each reduction linocut is produced by hand; from the initial drawings, to the intricate cutting, inking and printing of editions. As a result Jennifer’s editions are kept very small. Jennifer works in relief and intaglio methods, however her preferred printmaking technique is ‘Reduction linoprinting’ otherwise known as the suicide method! In this method, a multi coloured print is pulled from a single block. The lino is inked with the lightest colour and the first printing is made. The areas to remain that colour are then cut away. This is the process for each layer, therefore it cannot be rewound or repeated. As a result Jennifer’s editions are kept very small. Her linocuts are drawn and cut by hand and her preferred inks are oil-based due to the vivid colours that can be achieved. They are also more agreeable with colour mixing. Jennifer enjoys the challenges of this method which requires thoughtful planning and execution. At the same time, it enables a certain degree of flexibility as the concept she begins with is never set in stone. The print evolves and changes shape during the process. She constantly responds to what the work needs rather than being restricted by preconceived ideas.
