Werner Drewes
Werner Drewes was a painter, printmaker, and teacher, who was born in Canig, Germany, in 1899. His father, a Lutheran Minister, hoped he would become an architect, but Werner chose the life of an artist. After he served on the front line in France during the war, Werner was admitted to the Bauhaus in 1921, where he studied under Klee, Itten, and Muche. Later, he traveled through Europe to study such old masters as Tintoretto, Velasquez and El Greco. After marrying Margaret Schrobsdorff, they traveled throughout South America, North America and Asia. In 1930, Werner immigrated to New York City with his family. In New York City, despite the Depression, Werner joined other Bauhaus artists such as Piet Mondrian and Lyonel Feininger to make a living as an artist. This group became the core of the American Abstract Artists group. Werner taught at Columbia University, worked on the design of the 1939 World's Fair building, and had shows at the Museum of Modern Art, Kleeman Gallery, and elsewhere. In 1946, he accepted a tenured position at the Washington University in St. Louis. In his later years, he moved to Virginia and continued to show at galleries in Germany, Turkey, and in the United States. The Smithsonian held a show attributing his 65 years as a printmaker at the Museum for American Artists.

- 220 for 2020. Art Edition B No. 101–200 ‘Self-Portrait in My Living Room’ 2021By David HockneyLocated in Zug, CHDavid Hockney 220 for 2020. Art Edition No. 101–200 ‘Self-Portrait in My Living Room’, 2021 11-color inkjet print on cotton-fiber archival paper 45.7 × 102.6 cm (18 × 40.4 in) Signed, numbered and dated Edition number 47 (from an edition of 100) In mint condition Unframed From a small, picturesque farmhouse in the rich fields and meadows of the northern French region of Normandy, Hockney followed and recorded the changing seasons throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. For the past decade, Hockney’s medium of choice has been the iPad and it was this technological instrument, he used to spontaneously depict impressions of the Norman landscape surrounding him. The two-year project entitled “220 for 2020” documents the passage of time by portraying the first spring blossoms, the smell of summer, the saturated colours of autumn, and the stark shapes of dark branches in winter time. This poetic undertaking represented a lifeline for the artist, and offered its viewers a message of hope in unprecedented times. As part of this project, Hockney included drawings from his “La Grande Cour, Rumesnil, Normadie, 26 Juli 2019”, sketchbook. These almost autobiographical accounts started in the vicinity of the artist’s Los Angeles home...Category
