The pictures are only for illustrative reasons, the work is offered unframed. Black Tulips and Vase, Feb 26, 2014, belong to Sultan’s famous Flower series. The artist is credited for the revival of the still life tradition where the image is deconstructed to the basic elements, thus Sultan’s work remains both abstract and representational. "The images... are really about the architecture in the paintings; they seem so massive and strong and permanent but nothing is permanent." — Donal Sultan Black Tulips and Vase, Feb 26, 2014, represents Sultan's still-life, where the shape of the object is reduced to the bare essentials. The image reveals one of the key features of Sultan’s work - the material juxtaposition- the contrast of a weighty background with ethereal shapes of the flowers. The printing technique translates the Sultan’s original paintings’ texture: linoleum, tar, flocking, plaster, tile, wood. This work is a silkscreen with enamel inks and tar-like texture on 4-ply museum board. DONALD SULTAN Donald Sultan (born 1951, Asheville, US) is a distinguished painter, sculptor, and printmaker, who rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the “New Image” movement. He is best known for the use of abstracted, geometric black forms against organic areas of bright color. Donald Sultan (USA, born 1951) is a distinguished painter, sculptor, and printmaker, who rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the New Yorker “New Image” movement. He has a unique artistic method and innovative approach to traditional subject matter. Known as Abstract Representation, Donald Sultan´s art is characterized by the use of geometric black forms set against organic areas of bright color, thus bringing an abstract sensibility to his iconographic images of still life. Throughout his career he has revisited and reinvented still life, using images of lemons, poppies, playing cards, fruits, flowers, and other objects. Donald Sultan’s Lemons, a recurrent theme in his artworks, has, in fact, become an iconic image all over the world. “All of the images of those dark pictures are really about the architecture in the paintings; they seem so massive and strong and permanent, but nothing is permanent. The image in the front is very fragile, but it conveys the loaded meaning of everything that is contained in the painting.” —Donald Sultan Sultan is considered to be at the forefront of contemporary art. Although his paintings are often classified as landscapes and still life, Sultan states that they are first and foremost abstracts. Besides paintings, drawings, and sculptures, he has created many editions. Donald Sultan’s prints are unique: he uses specific materials like “flocking’s” to create expressive and powerful prints that are reminiscent of his forceful paintings. Since his first solo exhibition in 1977, Sultan’s artistic career has progressed rapidly; his works are part of the most prominent public and private collections to be found across the globe.

Alex Katz, Yellow Tulips Contemporary, 21st Century, Silkscreen, Limited Edition Edition of 50 122,5 x 195,7 cm (48.2 x 77 in.) Signed and numbered, accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher Unframed “Yellow Tulips” is part of the famous flower painting series by Alex Katz. The aesthetics of flowers such as flags, tulips, and roses has been continuously explored by the artist throughout his career. "I generally start with oil sketches, because I can paint more quickly than I can draw. In this way I try to capture the sensation of what I’m doing, getting into the unconscious and creating the images, and then figuring out what I did." — Alex Katz Katz has been painting flowers since the 1960s, often during his summer residencies in Maine. The cropped, flattened composition displays a debt to Japanese woodblock art printing. The American artist is well-known for his large paintings, whose bold simplicity and unmodulated colours are now seen as precursors of Pop Art. "Yellow Tulips" is another of Katz's wonderfully bright exploration of nature and the landscape. He represents the volumes and colors created by the natural light, this artwork breathes nature, the radiant yellow delights the vision against the limitless black background. The painting “Tulips 4” which this edition is based on belongs to the Collection of Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. ALEX KATZ Alex Katz (American, born 1927) is the outstanding protagonist of figurative painting and one of our era's most acclaimed artists. In the late 1950s, the artist began to develop his mature style, characterized by elegance, simplicity, and stylized abstraction, which typifies his entire production. Alex Katz’s paintings...

  • An Organised Whole - Contemporary art, 21st Century, Landscape, Contemporary
    By Tacita Dean
    Located in Zug, CH
Tacita Dean An Organised Whole 2021 Screenprint Edition of 125 60 × 76 cm (23.62 × 29.92 in) Signed, numbered and dated In mint condition Tacita Dean, along with seven other leading international artists, were asked to create a print to celebrate Tate Modern’s 21st anniversary. Tacita Dean works in a large number of techniques in media ranging from painting to photography and film, frequently combining more than one of them. She addresses issues relating to the passage of time, exploring what we remember and how we remember it. Often her art revolves around decay and loss as triggers of memories. For her Tate Modern 21 Years print Tacita Dean compounds the traditional ideas of landscape, and still life in a single collaged image. The background is from Tacita's extensive vintage postcard collected by the artist in her visits to European flea markets, while the black and white object is from her Father’s collection of flints. The foregrounding of the flint changes its scale, suggesting something more monumental than a simple flint, and having too the characteristics of a Henry Moore public sculpture. "My relationship to film begins at the that moment of shooting, and ends in the moment of projection. Along the way there are several stages of magical transformation that imbue the work with varying layers of intensity." —Tacita Dean TACITA DEAN Tacita Dean is a dedicated conceptual artist working primarily in film. Her eloquent 16 and 35mm analogue films are carried by a sense of history, time and place, and a fascination with the unique qualities of film itself. She was 17 years old and she found an old wind-up Standard-8 camera in his study. Being clockwork, ‘it didn’t need a battery, so I put a film in that’. And away she went. Influenced by a range of artists and writers, including Marcel Broodthaers...
