Zheng Lu
Contemporary Chinese calligraphic stainless steel sculpture

2023

About the Item

Zheng Lu Silver River, 2023 Stainless steel Edition 1 of 3 47¼ x 27½ x 19¾ in. 120 x 70 x 50 cm ZL090.1 The gravity-defying sculptural works of Zheng Lu (b. 1978) are installed in public spaces throughout China, including a monumental work at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing. Pulsing with movement, they evoke splashes of water in mid-air. They are technically astonishing; their fluid, animated forms are charged with the energy (qi) of the universe, belying their steel composite. Many are deeply influenced by his study of traditional Chinese philosophy, and often calligraphy, an art form he practiced growing up in a literary family. Zheng Lu is known for using language as a pictorial element, composing the surface of stainless-steel sculptures out of thousands of Chinese characters derived from texts and poems of historical significance.

The sculptures of Damon Hyldreth appear both static and fluid, rigid and flexible, strong and smooth, effectively blurring the line between nature and structure. By crafting organic forms from an obviously man-made metal, Hyldreth creates a unique symbiosis between nature and structure, unifying the sculpture and the surroundings through the free-flowing energy and architecture of his artworks. Keeping in mind the intimate connection between artists and their tools, Hyldreth studies the potential energies of his metals and coaxes out exquisite forms and natural power. Using mainly stainless steel, as well as the occasional bronze and Cor-ten steel, Hyldreth allows his materials to dictate their final shape and become an ultimate collaboration between man and matter. The evocative forms subliminally draw the audience in, giving every viewer a deeply personal experience. In 2004 Damon received his BFA in Sculpture from San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA. Public and private installations of Hyldreth’s work include the town of Palm Desert, CA, the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong, The W Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, Trump Hollywood, Hollywood, FL Neiman Marcus, Houston, TX, Soffitel Hotel, Los Angeles, CA and the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza...
