What now seems like a lifetime but is merely a decade ago I sat slumped at my desk, head on arm pushing a pencil round a piece of paper dreaming up ways to kill time and break the chains holding me to my desk, Monday to Friday each day became the same and I was eating my brain. Then one day whilst dreaming up further ideas in the series of ‘Ways to kill time’ the pencil lines on the pad started to become characters, strange and dysfunctional they formed my dysfunctional world which had no rule. Slowly I figured the pencil could be replaced with a marker pen (the Pentel N50 to be exact) and the paper replaced with cheap vinyl which was acquired from DIY stores, these characters once resigned to a life on paper filed in a folder under ‘Not suitable for visual consumption’ began to have a life of their own; adhered to lamp post and electrical boxes they plotted and linked my route home, one became 10 and slowly 10 became more than I can remember. Each evening and as much of the day as I could rob was spent drawing and cutting out stickers. Stickers became posters, posters became more ambitious and somewhere in between I quit my job or maybe that was I got fired, either way the inevitable had happened. Like a river cuts it’s own path, I’d cut mine. This family of dysfunctional characters began evolve, they started to satirise and hold to ransom all that fell into their grasp, a welcome jolt of subversion in today’s media-saturated environment, the very same thing I’d grown up on. Bank notes were drawn and printed over and put into circulation for the unsuspecting to receive in their change, billboards taken over with public service announcements. I wanted to encourage people to not just to ‘see’, but to look at what surrounds them and their lives, reflecting our increasingly bizarre popular culture, re-thinking and reworking cultural figures and genres to comment on our ethos of conspicuous consumption. A Pandora’s box of bittersweet delights, sweet and sugary on the surface, but with an unfamiliar, uncomfortable, taste beneath. This isn’t the beginning, it’s not the end it’s happy never ending. D*

The KAWS Along The Way figurine is a rendition of the artist's 2013 18 foot wood sculpture originally exhibited at Mary Boone gallery NY. Along the Way presents a unique pose for KAWS’s signature Companion characters. KAWS' design features two of his iconic companions leaning on each other for emotional support, hands heavy, and eyes cast downward. Two years later, KAWS supersized the composition, installing an 18-foot-tall wooden version of Along the Way in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum, which the museum also acquired for its permanent collection. Large scale versions of Along the Way have also been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas. Medium: Painted Vinyl Cast Resin. 10.5 x 9 inches. New/sealed in original box; excellent condition. Stamped on the underside of foot. From a sold out edition of unknown. KAWS: KAWS is an American graffiti artist and designer known for his toys, paintings, and prints. Born Brian Donnelly on November 4, 1974 in Jersey City, NJ, KAWS graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and went on to work in animation. “When your whole art is based on the lettering you choose, you kinda figure out what ones work together. I just liked the shapes of the k, a, w, s,” he explained of his moniker. Having started as a graffiti artist in New York in the early 1990s, KAWS began reworking advertisements in his distinctive style. Pop Art and culture permeate his cartoonish Companion series of figurines, which share a resemblance to the works of Takashi Murakami. KAWS worked together with Nike in 2017 to produce an Air Jordan 4 shoe and has done multiple collaborations with the clothing brand Uniqlo, continuing to blur the boundaries between fine and commercial art. The artist is known for his large scale public installations, such as 2019’s KAWS: Holiday which was installed in the Hong Kong harbor during Basel Hong Kong. In 2019, THE KAWS ALBUM (2005) sold at auction for a record $14.8 million, breaking his previous record of $2.7 million which was set in 2018. This work is a take on the Beatles' famous 1967 album cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but instead replaced with characters from The Simpsons with the artist's signature Xs drawn across their eyes and skull. After years in the industry, KAWS gained approval from his peers in the street art world and more recently prestige from the museum and gallery worlds. His work today can be found in the collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris. KAWS currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Related Categories Retna. Shepard Fairey. Street Art. Damien Hirst. Art toys. Kaws Companion. Kaws toys...Category

- Dead GuyBy Dennis McNettLocated in Philadelphia, PAThis is an original sculpture collaboration by artists Dennis McNett (also known as Wolfbat) and Alex Yanes from their "Good Medicine" exhibition at Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia, PA, USA. This sculpture series marks the first time the two artists have ever worked collaboratively. PRESS RELEASE // Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present "Good Medicine", an exhibition featuring sculptural works in wood by Dennis McNett and Alex Yanes. New individual works by the artists will be displayed alongside pieces that have been created collaboratively between their studios. The show considers the concept of positive energy and how moods, situations, or experiences can be shaped by the presence of a strong force for good, while focusing broadly on the many ways that spirituality is practiced and explored in contemporary culture. Symbols, totems, and signs in a range of sizes are hand-carved and crafted from wood, resin, and acrylic to manifest the uplifting theme behind the works in three dimensions. "Good Medicine" will be on view through July 21, 2018. Both artists have practices that revolve around ideas of tradition, personal and communal narratives, nostalgia, and heritage. They express these themes in a blended style of neo-pop and folk art, drawing on their proximity to the subculture of skateboarding. With bold graphic elements and intricate detailing, the wooden sculptures, carvings, and installations portray a deeply personal and self-reflexive approach to art-making and craft, inviting the viewer to contemplate one’s quest for self-actualization through the assemblages. Dennis McNett is known for his large-scale woodcut sculptures that fuse relief printmaking with traditional wood carving. Steeped in domestic and international mythologies, McNett often receives the seeds of concepts for pieces through meditation and his spiritual practice that he then renders in his wood carvings, wood-cut panels, and prints. Over 15 works will be on display in "Good Medicine"– including "Big Mary’s Resurrection", an example of McNett’s dedication to clearing areas of bad energy left behind by past events. Also on view will be a new Owl Spirit sculpture series and collaged panels. His birds of prey and Norse images exist in high-contrast, with alternating deep and shallow black marks that delineate swaths of colored or natural wood surfaces. Alex Yanes constructs his surreal layered, textural sculptures from wood, epoxy resin, acrylic and spray enamel. The combination of materials gives his work a subtle gloss, with clean colors and polish. All Yanes’s 7 works in "Good Medicine", including a large wall installation, are brand new and showcase his signature pop graphics. The postmodern mashups reference funhouse aesthetics, with a nod to comics, cartoons, and vintage typography...Category
