Einar Norman
Madonna of Notre Dame

1949

About the Item

This is a unique sculpture made of a bulding block in limestone from Notre Dame in 1949 by Einar Norman. Gustav Einar Norman, born 12 February 1896 in Avesta, died 28 October 1950 in Malmö, was a Swedish stonemason, sculptor and draftsman. Norman first conducted self-study before studying at the Essem school in Malmö 1945–1947 and on a study trip to Paris in 1949 were he made this sculpture. Separately, he exhibited at Malmö Folkets hus in 1948. He participated in Skåne's art association's exhibitions in Malmö 1947–1949 and a memorial exhibition with his art was shown in the SDS hall in 1950. His art consists of block-like concrete figures that often represent people at work, women and children in stone and clay in sandstone and granite, he processed the surfaces very finely so that the surface would emphasize the plastic effect and give material contours . Norman is represented at the Malmö museum.

A carver, designer, and teacher, Wolfgang Behl was born in Berlin, Germany where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher was otto Hitzberger, sculptor and architecture carver. I have seen some his work, particularly in carved wood compared to Constantin Brancusi although this one seems way more reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti. In 1939, Behl came to the United States and taught briefly in Pennsylvania at the Perkiomen School and in Rhode Island at the Rhode Island School of Design. There in 1943, he won the Joseph N. Eisendrath prize for sculpture. He also became a friend of Louis Mayer...
