About the Item
Hand is a polished bronze sculpture by contemporary artist Marcelo Martin Burgos, dimensions are 126 × 50 × 40 cm (49.6 × 19.7 × 15.7 in).
The sculpture is signed and numbered, it is part of a limited edition of 8 editions, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This sculpture was made by the artist as a good luck charm for his daughter's future obstacles. The hand is modelled after the Hand of the Mysteries, sometimes referred to as the Philosopher's Hand. This alchemical representation first surfaced in Isaac Holland's Die Hand der Philosophen in the fifteenth century. Marcelo Burgos uses personal symbols with his bronze hand to conjure everything his daughter will need in life, just as the alchemical hand was full of symbols.
In many cultures, golden statuary is reserved for deities, this metal being associated with all that is sacred and spiritual. For Marcelo Martin Burgos, gold acquires a very important meaning in this respect, as the sacred is linked to childhood. The reflective aspect of the polished bronze is also a way of inviting the viewers on a journey into their childhood through the inclusion of their image in the work.

Marcelo Martin Burgos
Marcelo Martin Burgos lives and works between Buenos Aires and Madrid. The artist’s golden bronze sculptures are anchored in the childhood universe he is fascinated about. Monsters, dragons, robots and other creatures populating childish imagination are the main subjects of his sculpture activity, also fed by the cinematic production he practices in parallel. Bronze, that he appreciates for its versatility and golden finish, allows him to create mirror-like sculptures that reflect the childhood images and memories of those who look at them. “My work is deeply connected to childhood and gold is a way to exalting children creativity. Childhood memories are golden.’’
