Nando Kallweit
Marlene III by Nando Kallweit. Tall, elegant bronze sculpture of human figure.

2023

About the Item

Marlene III is a tall, elegant bronze sculpture of a human figure. Nando Kallweit is a German sculptor working in bronze and oak. Kallweit carves the original piece from a piece of oak using a chainsaw. The oak marque is then used to create a cavity in clay and sand into which the bronze is poured. The resultant bronze is particularly organic and tactile. The wood grain is apparent, as are the cut marks where the chainsaw has bitten into the wood. As a young boy, Kallweit was inspired by the beauty and antiquity of a bust of Nefertiti housed in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, his new-found freedoms allowed him to travel to Egypt and develop his belief in the basic strength and pride inherent in inhumanity. His sculptures seek to emphasize this through elongated forms and upright postures. He reduces the figures to simple gestures and movements creating sculptures with a wonderful interplay between the archaic and the modern; between art and design. Dimensions: 140cm tall on a base that is 20cm x 20cm. Edition of 25 + 2AP
