About the Item

We are proud to present an original very early bronze, (1958) by American sculptor Robert Russin. Robert Russin began his career as a WPA sculptor, and received dozens of commissions during his career both public and private. Russin created the famous bronze figurative sculpture that resides in front of the City of Hope in California. He also created the 14 foot bronze head of Abraham Lincoln which was installed on the Lincoln highway in Wyoming, and was awarded numerous public and private commissions throughout his career. The Robert Russin sculptures come directly from the personal collection of the artist and family. "Primavera", is an original bronze on black marble base, signed in plat as was the artist's preference, cast in 1958, total dimension including the base is 14 inches, it is the first to be cast and the artist held it for himself in his personal collection, cast in dore' bronze which means it has a gold patina. this is the first time it has been available for sale.     Maxine Kim Stussy was a prolific sculptor and painter from the late 1940’s to present. Maxine led an incredibly artistic life traveling the world with her husband at the time, artist Jan Stussy, who headed the art department at UCLA for several decades. Both artists were close associates of Stanton MacDonald Wright, known as one of the greatest American modernist artists, also known as the co creator of the synchronistic movement in the teens with Marcel Duchamp. Maxine was unrestricted by any singular medium; her sculptures took form in wood assemblage, concrete, bronze and unique nail assemblage. Large size seemed natural to her, and she often created figurative sculpture over 7 feet high.
