A wonderfully made and beautifully designed Mid-Century Modern pottery charger by famed California potter and sculptor Robert Maxwell.
Maxwell co-founded Earthgender pottery with fellow potter David Cressey.
This charger/platter was made at his Venice beach, California Pottery studio in the early 1960s as verified by his wife. It is a very rare piece in respect to design, pattern, and sheer Size/heft (it is a very heavy work). We have not seen another quite like it.
Apparently, he only made a few with some filled with melted glass to create the design/pattern.
Signed by Maxwell on the base.
Would clearly be a great addition to any mid-century pottery/ceramics collection...

Mid-century ceramic decorative plate by Claude Vayssier for Cerenne Workshop (circa 1950s). This ceramic plate with a fish incised in the centre over the lustrous black background is signed by Claude Vayssier, the decorator. The black base is complemented by a brown and cream pattern with repeating vertical lines incised at the edges. An eye-catching piece from the South of France. In good overall condition. The maker's mark appears on the underside with the signature of Mr. Vayssier. Upon request a video may be provided.
About Atelier Cerenne: Created by Charles René Neveux, the Cerenne workshop, active from 1945 - 1958, takes its name from the contraction of its company name "Céramique René Neveux". At the height of its renown, the workshop was one of the most important in Vallauris, employing around fifty people, including 15 decorators. A fantastic, freeform, large, heavy plate/ charger by American master potter Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. Very unique and scarce work with rare use of color. Very hard to come by. One of our personal favorites along with the Chawan tea bowl.
Signed on base and dated (1961) by Voulkos. This was made during one of his most magical and experimental phases.

Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary
doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards.

Hand made glazed studio pottery shallow bowl or plate by Amelie (Amely, Aly) Richter, in plum, lavender and black ues. Signed Aly Richter on underside.
Before her marriage to Dr Georg Martin Richter, in November of 1920, naturalised American citizen, Amelie (Amely, Aly) Richter, had been a Baroness, born in Bavaria and raised in France. A long-time hobbyist, after Dr Richter’s death in 1942, Amelie opened her own studios for art and interior design in New York and London, where she refurbished and embellished old furniture. Inspired by her many trips with Georg to museums and archives, Amelie was known to utilise motifs borrowed from prehistoric cave paintings and American Indian art, and to accent her pieces with semi-precious stones, in shades of purple and turquoise. After directing the arts and crafts department at private high schools in Arizona and California, between 1947 and 1951, Amelie moved to Boston where she studied ceramics at the Museum School of Fine Arts, under the tutelage of Norman Arsenault. She continued her training at the Alfred University where she took technical classes in glaze calculations and clay-body composition, before becoming a member of the Pottery Workshop...
