Henry John Yeend King (1855-1924) was a landscape and rustic genre painter. He began his artistic career by working for three years in a glassworks. King went on to study painting under William Bromley in London, and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris.
He exhibited from 1874 to 1924 at The Royal Academy and The New Watercolour Society. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879, the Royal Institute in 1886, later becoming Vice President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Provenance:
Presented as a gift to Rawdon Brown, an English scholar living in Venice . This painting hung in Palazzo Gussoni-Grimani della Vida until his death in 1883. Like Monet painting Rouen at different times of day, Cooke selected Salute decades earlier for the same experimental purpose. This version, backlit with gold and amber, is among the artist's most dramatic.
