A very fine Italian 19th century porcelain plaque of Madonna della Primavera ("Madonna detter Primavera with Bambino"), after Nicolò Barabino (1831-1891). The finely painted standing Madonna holding baby Jesus in her arms surrounded by flowers, framed in a Gothic revival style giltwood carved frame. The back inscribed: "Madonna detter Primavera - nach Barabino" and handwritten "E. Guenther, Phila". Signed lower left corner, circa 1890-1900. Nicolò Barabino (1831–1891) was an Italian academic painter of religious and historical subjects, active in Florence and Genoa. He was born in Sampierdarena. His initial studies were at the Genovese Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, under Giuseppe Isola. In Genoa, he befriended Maurizio Dufour. In 1857, he won the Durazzo scholarship to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He designed some of the lunettes completed as mosaics for the portals of the Florence Cathedral...

A Beautiful Late 19th century Berlin K.P.M. – Vienna style porcelain rectangular plaque of the five senses Signed Knoeller Finely painted after Hans Makart with the five vertical panels, each depicting a female nude against an exotic naturalistic background, emblematic of a senses, the reserves enriched with gilt stylized vine. Impressed K.P.M and scepter marks, painted blue Beehive mark, within a giltwood frame. Hans Makart, was an Austrian allegorical painter and designer (1840-1884) who trained at the Vienna Academy between 1850 and 1851 under Johann Fischbach. Makart rejected the established rules of classicism, preferring to embrace the sensual expression of color. This beautiful antique porcelain plaque exhibits the fine quality of craftsmanship and artistry that the prestigious Berlin porcelain manufactory, KPM, is renowned for. The plaque is delicately painted with the full-length portrait of Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810), Queen of Prussia and wife of King William III (1770-1840). Louise was a popular Queen and was respected for her successful negotiations with Napoleon, before he became Emperor of France. In this plaque, she is depicted descending the steps of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which was the seat of the Prussian monarchy. She wears a simple robe a l'anglaise, which was fashionable at the time, and looks directly at the viewer in a symbol of power and majesty.
