"Neptune Washington" is a large contemporary lithograph by Ron Adams (1934- ), created in 1996. It depicts a muscular African-American fisherman polling his fishing boat in a river in the rain. Adams distinctive rendering of Neptune conveys his great strength, as well as the grace, fluidity and balance of his body. He is barefoot and shirtless, dressed in striped overalls with his right shoulder strap undone. A bucket of fish sits next to his left foot, while fishing line, an open tin can and a frog are seen on a wet bench in front of Neptune. A long-necked white bird (crane) sits on a log floating by in the river near the opposite shore. Ominous storm clouds are present in the background over trees, brush and rocks along the opposite river bank. The lithograph is printed on handmade deckle-edged paper and presented with a museum style floating mount in a black wood frame with a thick cream mat and glazed with UV protected plexiglass. It is signed in pencil in the right lower corner along with the date, '96. The title "Neptune Washington" is inscribed in pencil in the lower margin in the center and initials HGI are in the lower left. The initials HGI may stand for Hand Graphics Institute, which Adams founded in New Mexico. The initials rather than the usual edition number (which consisted of 70), possibly signify an artist proof or possibly a Hors-Commerce (before trade) printing. The print is in excellent condition. The frame measures 38" x 30.25" x 1.25". Ron Adams is a prominent African-American master printmaker. His detailed depictions of African-American musicians, craftsmen, folk heroes and everyday people have made him one of the top figurative artists and printmakers in the country. Jane Dickson has been exhibiting her oil stick painting, watercolor drawing, and prints in museums and galleries domestically and internationally for two decades. She frequently works with unusual surfaces such as Astroturf, sandpaper, vinyl, or carpet to exploit the implicit references and the textural possibilities these materials offer. She was part of an eclectic East Village (Greenwich village) scene that included Keith Haring, John Crash Matos, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Kenny Scharf, David Wojnarowicz, Robert Crumb and Richard Hambleton. After moving to the city in 1977, Dickson worked as a programmer for the iconic Times Square billboard project and with collectives Fashion Moda (with Jenny Holzer) and Collaborative Projects Inc. As a participant in the iconic Colab DIY “Times Square Show” and “Real Estate Show” of 1980, her work was seen alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Kenny Scharf, and Kiki Smith. Dickson’s paintings explore subjects such as peep shows, carnivals, and demolition derbies with dark irony. Widely exhibited, Dickson’s work has been shown in the 1985 Whitney Biennial Solo exhibitions of her work have been shown at The Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris, Creative Time, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2008 she completed a mosaic for MTA in the 42nd street station. In 2010 she was invited to paint a leather jacket for the Andy Warhol Museum. In the early eighties, Warhol collected leather jackets, including one painted with his portrait and that of Jean-Michel Basquiat by the new wave artist Stefano Castronovo. Artists commissioned for this project include Castronovo, Rita Ackermann, Frederick “Fab Five Freddy” Brathwaite, Dan Colen, Ronnie Cutrone, Jane Dickson, Duncan Hannah, Lee Quinones, Tom Sachs, Kenny Scharf, Walter Steding and Ouattara Watts. Her images have appeared extensively in books and periodicals. She received awards from the National Academy of Arts & Science, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and was the recipient of the Bau Residency in Cassis, France. About David Lord by Randy Leffingwell: Inspiration for David Lord to draw and paint came from hours spent as a child at a drawing board set next to his talented grandmother’s easel. “She painted flowers and landscapes . . . I drew cars, boats, airplanes and army tanks.” In addition, a beloved, dedicated, high school teacher, who “instilled the love of art history, taught me art skills and techniques, and the ability to ‘know what to keep . . . and what to leave out’ of my art.” A New Englander by birth, David attended high school in Connecticut. Art was his favorite class and he kept his eighth grade dream of going to art school alive with hundreds of hours spent drawing cars and planes. After high school, he began two years of art studies at the University of Hartford in Connecticut and then began training at Art center College of Design in Los Angeles, California. After two semesters there, general Motors granted him a full scholarship. He graduated in 1965 as a Bachelor of professional Arts in Industrial Design. Upon graduation, Lord was hired by UniRoyal in South bend, Indiana, to design consumer products and eventually products for military application in Vietnam. “I also had the honor and privilege of working with Gordon Buehrig on the preliminary design, drawings, and clay for the 8/10 scale Cord, built of vacuum-formable, color impregnated plastic. After three years with a South Bend industrial design firm, Lord started his own company. During this period he spent many late evenings at the easel in his own studio, painting and drawing automobiles. The direction of his artwork, philosophy and goals began to form. “I decided to focus my love of all things automotive with my talent for painting and drawing.
