Jos De Mey Sideboards

Jos De Mey was a Flemish-Belgian painter. He is primarily known for depictions of impossible objects in a photo-realistic style, with acrylic paintings constituting the majority of his work. He frequently depicted characters of other artists, notably Magritte, M. C. Escher, and Bruegel. Prior to his focus on painting, he taught and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. At the time of his death De Mey resided in Zomergem, Belgium.

Large Sideboard by Jos De Mey for Van den Berghe-Pouvers, Belgium, circa 1960
By Jos De Mey, Van den Berghe-Pauvers 1
Located in Amsterdam, NL
Stunning large sideboard designed by Jos De Mey for Van den Berghe-Pouvers in Gent, Belgium, circa 1960. Made of the highest quality walnut with a beautiful grain, this piece would make a wonderful addition to any modern interior. It contains a bar chest, four doors and five-drawer units underneath. The doors contain keyholes and can be locked with small keys that come with the piece. In good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. The tempered modernism of Jos De Mey (1928-2007). Jos de Mey has been a prominent figure in the furniture scene in Gent, Belgium. Van den Berghe-Pauvers, the furniture company where he would be bound to untill the early 1960s, presented themselves as the manufacturer of better furniture within everyone's reach. In the early 1950s, upcoming furniture designers like Emiel Veranneman, Eric Lemesre and Eric Grinwis worked for the company, but mainly Jos de Mey set the tone for their success. De Mey wanted his furniture to be "sober and honest". His study at the Gentse Academie has without a doubt been a big influence on his vision. There he was trained by, among others, Geo Bontinck and especially Gaston Eysselinck...
