Artist Commentary: I have been asked numerous times by my loyal customers to create more holiday winter cards of my paintings. As I was looking outside my window in this month of March, the snowy scenes in front of me were an ideal inspiration for me. And to make things even better for my creative juices, Paris had just been covered a few weeks before by a couple inches of snow. This happens very rarely and the whole city was paralysed. Parisians were unhappy, as always, but Paris under the snow is magnificent. I asked my good parisian friend to share with me the pictures she took of Paris under the snow. Between the winter view from my window and my friend’s pictures, I had enough material to immerse myself into this project. In 3 weeks, I created 8 paintings and I had the best time of my life!!! I wish I could do that all the time. I painted holiday lights, ornaments, some snow, and I even had an american cardinal in snowy Paris!!! I felt right at home between my 2 countries: France and the US! What wintery scenes or holiday scenes do you find magnificent? Charles Constantine Hoffbauer (1875 - 1957) Day at the Beach (Mother and Child) Oil on paper 10 x 8 inches Hoffbauer was born in Paris in 1875, the son of an Alsatian architect, artist and archaeologist who published Paris through the Ages. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau, rubbing shoulders with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet, then won an Honorable Mention in the Salon of 1896 and academic prizes in 1898-99. At the Paris Universal Exposition he won a bronze medal. On a French government traveling scholarship called the Prix National du Salon, Hoffbauer discovered Italy, Greece and Egypt. Then the government purchased Champs de bataille in 1904 (Musée du Luxembourg). On a second scholarship in late 1909, Hoffbauer visited New York where he was greeted by his friend Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the "Gibson Girl." Early Light is an original oil on paper by Richard Whadcock. This was an early morning on the way to the study. A sea mist was being slowly lifted by the rising sun and revealing the surroundings through subtly changing diffused light.. Richard Whadcock is a contemporary artist specialising in atmospheric landscape paintings. His contemporary landscape paintings explore the South Downs and East Sussex coast. Trying to capture its ever changing dramatic atmosphere from silent stillness to squally days. The South Downs are only a starting point as the paintings themselves eventually take over and follow their own path creating their unique surface landscape. Richard studied at Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic from 1986-89 where the work crossed between painting and printmaking. He then went onto study for his MA at the Royal College of Art specialising in printmaking. He utilised etching but mainly lithography due to its closeness to painting. Along side these he would also paint with all these disciplines feeding each other and expanding ideas. After leaving college Richard was awarded a residency at the Lowick House Print Workshop in Cumbria and more recently, 2014, he was also awarded a two week residency at Cill Rialaig artists village in Kerry, Ireland. His studio has been part of the Phoenix Arts studios in Brighton for the last 15yrs. It is one of the largest artist lead organisations remaining.
