Watercolor Painting of the Bellerophon, Dated 1855
Located in Downingtown, PA
The large watercolor picture depicts the Bellerophon sailing out to sea past South Sea Castle off Spithead. Figures can be seen on board. She flies the Blue Ensign, a Union Jack and the Royal Standard. South Sea Castle is to her left and land with a row of houses on the right. An inscription below reads: The Bellerophon 74 Sailing OFF South Sea Castle 1855 Bellerophon: A Greek hero who, with the help of the winged horse Pegasus slew the monster Chimaera Bellerophon: "Common" 74 gun 3rd Rate. Based on HMS Dublin of 1755, a total of 14 ships of the Bellerophon class were built, and a total of 93 "Common" class vessels were built in all. Mr Timothy Akers MA, B.Sc (Hon's) Maritime Research Archaeologist. An Account of the Fitting out of H.M.S. "Bellerophon." This affords a brilliant example of what can be done in the Navy, when a ship's company are commanded by officers possessing the requisite union of due seamanlike and administrative qualities, and I give it as a high standard by which all such may be measured, and as an appropriate pendant to the first section of our subject. On March 7th, 1847, orders were unexpectedly received for the 90-gun ships "Rodney", Captain Edward Collier...

James C. Borden Large Cityscape Street Scene Watercolor Painting Cerused Frame
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Absolutely masterful watercolor street scene painting by James C. Borden (1928-2013). Prepare to be awestruck when you lay eyes on this exquisitely detailed watercolor painting by James Borden. The modern painting depicts an ethereal urban scene crowned with summer light. The scale itself is impressive at over four feet wide and three feet high (50.75? x 36.675?). There is just so much to see, so much texture, so many layers. Borden has truly mastered his medium. This is a watercolor cityscape on paper, housed in a cerused wood frame and protected by a pane of acrylic. The painting’s vibrant colors have beautifully preserved. The mastery of this painting is unreal. Borden’s orchestration of color leads the eye through the painting with late afternoon sunlight carving a path through an otherwise gray urban interior. His use of color is narrative. The viewer is being teased away from gloomy city life with a glimmer of sun and nature on the horizon. The nuance in his layering, through elevated passages of transparency… simply brilliant. Be sure to spend time with this painting. There is more to see each and every time you look. Did you notice the Easter egg? Borden used his name as the sign on one of the buildings on the left. The painting is pencil signed “Jim Borden.” James C. Borden studied at the School of the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was a life long painter. Mr. Borden spent much of his life in South Bend...
