Chantal Thomass hair-breaded sculpture hat «African Summer » Collection, S/S 92

About the Item

The French fashion designer Chantal Thomass launched her label in 1975. At the end of the 70s together with figures such as Montana, Mugler and Kenzo that was celebrated for their irreverence towards conventional fashion vocabularies. Her style is eclectic, excessive and immediately recognisable. This unique and intricate hair sculpture hat constructed with artificial hair and a metal structure was created for her summer 1992 catwalk show “Été Africain”. The piece perfectly illustrates the designer deep pool of influences. Here she celebrates the ideas of African femininity and African beauty aesthetics Chantal Thomass avant-garde artistry echoes the hair sculptures of the contemporary artist Joanne Petit-Frère whose hair-breaded sculptures have been exhibited in Museum such as MoMA and featured in Vogue and other notable fashion publications. This intricate , handwoven work perfectly shows how art and fashion are intrinsically interwoven. This work is a definite museum piece
