Vintage 1969 Pierre Cardin Documented Red & Black Vinyl Space-Age Mod Maxi Coat

About the Item

An absolutely iconic and well-documented Pierre Cardin red and black vinyl maxi length mod coat dating back to his epic 1969-70 fall/winter collection. As shown, this archival piece had a full page editorial in L'Officiel magazine and is part of many museum's private collections, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1951 Cardin opened his own couture house and by 1957, he started a ready-to-wear line; a bold move for a French couturier at the time. The look most associated with Cardin is the "Space Age" collections of the 1960's which made some of the most futuristic clothing of the era. This ultra rare museum-quality coat is a perfect example of his genuine. The fabric itself is fantastic; futuristic fully-lined coated bright red and black vinyl to protect against rain or snow. I love the bold puff-ribbed collar with flows into a center graphic arrow design. All the trimming, included the cuffs and hemline, has stitched relief work which is lightly padded within to create sensational depth. An unforgettable piece of wearable fashion history. "The clothing I prefer are those I invent for a life that doesn't yet exist, the world of tomorrow." Pierre Cardin Measurements Bust: 34-35 inches Hips: up to 40 inches Sleeve Length: 23 inches Total Length: 53 inches Shoulder to Shoulder: 16 inches This Pierre Cardin documented full-length jacket is in beautiful condition with no rips, stains or holes. Perfectly working hidden front snaps and fully lined. Museum quality example of his work.

  • Vintage 1969 Thea Porter Couture Rare 'Samawa' Embroidered Wool Documented Coat
By Thea Porter Couture, Thea Porter
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
An ultra rare and highly coveted Thea Porter Couture ‘Samawa’ colorful woven wool coat dating back to her fall-winter 1969 collection. An example of this gorgeous garment can be found in the book 'Thea Porter: Bohemian Chic' by Laura McLaws Helms and Venetia Porter on page 60. This is a such a unique and truly iconic piece within her body of work. I adore the vibrant abstract natural yarn pattern work, which was inspired by Iraqi 'Samawa' carpets, as well as the side hemline slits that reveal a luxurious black satin lining. The rabbit fur trim is so incredibly soft and the zip-up front closure makes this piece so wearable. An almost identical coat was even featured in British Vogue's Fall 1970 issue, shot by the famous Barry Lategan. During this period, Thea Porter's clothing attracted many celebrity customers who enjoyed wearing her erotic creations whose secret was to conceal rather than reveal. Her clients, some of whom also became her friends, included Lauren Bacall, Bianca Jagger, Mick Jagger, Sharon Tate, Elizabeth Taylor, and Pete Townshend. This magical garment originally sold at Giorgio’s of Beverly Hills which is less than a mile away from our boutique! A truly important museum worthy coat by the queen of the bohemian fashion...
