Leonard Paris Silk Floral Floral Print Open Square-Back Maxi Dress, 1970s

About the Item

Known for their unique, feminine prints and exotic designs, Leonard Paris is a staple when it comes to comfortable yet elegant designs. In a sense, every Leonard dress is a canvas on which beautiful artwork can be displayed and worn. This early 1970s dress is done in their signature silk jersey. It features a whimsical floral design with white daisies and other flowers in shades of fuchsia, rose, yellow-orange, and coral on an oyster grey ground and features the “Leonard” signature throughout. From a round neck with a dense floral border offset by pink and white stripes, the dress is in the Directoire style characterized by its defined empire waist and column silhouette. Light gathering on the skirt adds some dimension to the smooth panels of fabric while semi-puffed sleeves add volume. On the back, a deep square neckline perfectly balances the modest front of the dress. This dress offers a sense of vintage sophistication through its classic design and artistic print making it a great option as an evening look or an upscale party dress. Size estimate: XS/S Shoulders: Sleeves: 22 inches Bust: 30-32 Waist: 26 inches Hips: 36 inches Length: 59 inches On the left side, the dress features a 21-inch slit outlined in the striped and floral border print. Unlined, this dress closes at centre back with a concealed zip (please note that the dress fully zips however is a bit too small for the mannequin). In very good condition, there are some stains on the interior neck facing that are not visible during wear. Professionally eco dry cleaned and pressed, high-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.

  • JW Anderson Silk Macrame Wood Beaded Fringe Dress Runway Spring 2019
    By J W Anderson
    Located in Boca Raton, FL
British designer JW Anderson is a trailblazer in the contemporary fashion market. With a vast array of unique collections and collaborations, Anderson’s aesthetic offers a much-needed reorientation of fashion by combining elements of timeless tailoring and artisanal handicraft. Following this vision for his Spring 2019 collection, this macramé dress is a perfect testament to design that is both simple and complex. The bodice of the dress is a combination of white and anthracite crepe de chine. The liquid fabric drapes beautifully over the shoulders creating a mock-shawl effect while the white and grey provide a sophisticated contrast. On one of the sleeves, the grey crepe is ruched while the other is split at the shoulder. This asymmetry provides additional interest to the very geometric lattice beading on the front of the bodice. The skirt is slightly pegged and is done from a neutral linen underlayer and a macramé overskirt that incorporates wooden beading in the mix of the knotting. The skirt finishes with a band of widely spaced fringe. The combination of raw edges, wood, and natural tones, paired with the modern silkiness of the grey crepe give this dress a refreshing and serene vibe. It can be worn for a casual day dress...

The print also features large orchids throughout, which is the signature Leonard flower. Done in a silky nylon jersey, the dress features an eclectic print of alternating stripes of white cut-out starbursts and marmalade orange and yellow starbursts on a black ground. This sleeveless dress comes with an attached capelet overlay piece that may be pulled back and worn over the shoulders, revealing another pattern of white starbursts...

  • Iconic 1996 Madonna 'Evita' Film-Worn Beaded Ivory Silk Couture Archival Gown
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
Own a major slice of celebrity and film history. Madonna wore this extraordinary ivory beaded couture gown for her portrayal of Eva Perón in the unforgettable 1996 film "Evita". Madonna campaigned to play the role of Evita and used her popstar status to acquire it. Many other actresses were considered to play the role such as Elaine Paige, Liza Minnelli, Cher and Meryl Streep. The film was a huge success for Madonna, who up until this time had not fared well in her acting exploits. Madonna even won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for her performance as the First Lady of Argentina. Madonna wears this gorgeous gown in the scenes at the Inaugural Ball as she dances and movingly sings the song, "High Flying, Adored." The fabric itself is a masterpiece; high quality silk satin that has been heavily adorned with hand set red jewels, pearls, rhinestones and glass beads. I love the chic cut-out neckline which rests on the collarbone and scoops low in the back. The gown flows into an hourglass nipped waist where it breaks into a unique zig-zag design. The piece work to create the skirting in particular is extraordinary. The yard and yards of luxurious silk satin personify the feminine ideal in clothing. We photographed the garment with and without a petticoat so you can see the true fullness. Not only was this gown an iconic look for the character but Madonna was also featured in the October 1996 issue of Vogue magazine wearing this gown. The gown was originally made for the actress Carol Lawrence and then worn by actress Daryl Hannah while accompanying John F. Kennedy, Jr. to meet the Queen of England. We were thrilled to find a picture of this meeting as well. With Madonna worn garments fetching extremely high prices at auction (her 'Desperately Seeking Susan...
