Antique Islamic Glazed Ceramic Bowl with Splashed Decoration

About the Item

An Islamic ceramic bowl from Samanid Dynasty Persia circa 10th century, possibly from Nishapur. The earth ware body of the bowl was made of a red clay, which was covered with an overall cream white glaze. On top of the glaze, amber yellow, and green splashed glazes were applied in an off-centered radiating pattern, with some spilled over the rim and dripped down on the exterior wall. Some parts were pooled into a deeper shade to add to the abstract feeling of the piece. It is generally agreed upon that the so called Islamic "Splashed Ware" mostly likely had its original inspiration from Chinese San Cai ware of Tang Dynasty, which spread westward along the silk road to reach the central Asia. The artisans in Central Asia, however, often adopted local form for practical reasons and sometimes added their own touches and flares. such as incision or sgraffito decoration, which is reflected in another blow listed as well. There are two small visible spur marks inside of the bowl, indicating the stacking firing in the kiln. For reference and similar examples, see "Ceramics from Islamic Lands. Kuwait National Musuem. The Al-Sabah Collection" p. 199-203
