19th Century Painting of Men in Armory in Gilt Burl Frame, from Laos or Thailand

About the Item

The setting, the detail, and the sense of conflict and mystery make this painting compelling. There is a contrast throughout the painting of softness and a hard edge. The trees and the grassy area reflect a landscape that is serene as they peek from behind the structure. The stage contains sharp weapons and a hardness as one man seems to brandish a small knife. We are deprived of information in the writing in another language surrounding the armory. And again we see softness with the ample drapes and somewhat refined design of the armory stage. The appraiser says it combines Western perspective and shadowing with Eastern imagery. The setting connotes conflict or action, but the color palette is calm in earth and green tones. The dress of the two figures is Southeast Asian - Thai or Laotian. It is antique from the late 19th century--Southeast Asian landscape, ink on vellum. Centering two figures in a raised armory with Fu Lion motif and character inscriptions. It measures 24 inches tall by 33 1/2 inches wide in a beautiful burl and gilt frame. This painting is in excellent condition given the period it was created. The colors are sharp, and there are no condition issues. This painting was acquired from the estate of a Southern California Collector in Redondo Beach, CA.

The stunning appearance of the rosettes that are hand carved into the panel are amazing. The panel seem like it was part of a larger architectural setting and the appraiser wonders if it might have been part of a confessional, although the holes may be a little to large for that. But this is an antique architectural carved and parcel gilt pierced wood panel...

  • 19th Century Corner Chair American or English
    Located in Lomita, CA
The cherub upholstery fabric of this antique corner chair will bring a smile to your face, but the piece deserves a deeper look. It has a secret.: The chair has a "second skin," in a tweed upholstery that someone was reluctant to remove. The cherub upholstery on the armrest of the chair is actually a shawl or drape for the for the chair. It is Victorian, carved and turned walnut on a part-upholstered corner armchair that is English or American from the late 19th Century according to our appraiser. The seat is triangular with a rounded front rail, that is backed by two low arms with raised upholstery. The curved seat rail has a long fringe trim, all raised on four cylindrical bead turned legs on casters. The detachable fabric drape or shawl is priceless. Appraisers beleive this could have possibly been half of a two-piece tete-a-tete chair...
