About the Item

A delightful Burmese cast bronze Buddha in the Arakan style, mid 20th century, Myanmar (Burma). The Buddha sits in the full lotus position, the soles of his feet turned up. His hands perform bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. One hand rests gracefully in his lap in meditation. The other hand drapes over his leg, fingers extend, reaching down to touch the earth. This gesture commemorates the moment the Buddha reaches enlightenment. His round, plump face is serene, with small features, including heavily lidded almond shaped eyes, flat nose, and a small mouth with full lips. His mouth set in a a lovely smile. Narrow ears with long earlobes that touch his shoulders frame his face. His hair is arranged in small, tight curls that cover the raised ushinisha. The ushnisha topped by flame finial. The Buddha shits upon a stepped, multi-tiered trapezoidal pedestal. The patinated bronze dark, with yellow highlights.
