Japanese antique small stone Buddha "Jizo Bodhisattva"/1750-1850/Rare design

About the Item

This is a small stone Buddha made after the middle of the Edo period in Japan. It is a type of Buddha statue called Jizo in Japan, and is one of the bodhisattvas in the world of Buddhism. It is a being who saves people in the world with an infinitely merciful heart. Its appearance is similar to that of a monk. Sometimes he holds a cane in his right hand and a jewel in his left, and sometimes his hands are in a chorus pose. In rare cases, there is also a possibility that it is a type of god called Dosojin. Their appearance resembles that of Jizo Bodhisattva, and many have their hands clasped in chorus. This god is said to be the god of travel, and has been worshiped by the Japanese since ancient times as a god who watches over the safety of travelers and prevents them from taking the wrong path. It is also often enshrined at the entrance to villages, and is believed to ward off evil spirits. A photo of Dosojin was published in a specialized book, so I'll include it here as well. Stone Buddhas come in a variety of sizes, and this one is a cute little one that can be held in one hand. And since it is a simple carving, it is possible that it was not carved by a professional carver, but by a craftsman from a village or town who was capable of carving work. This is a stone Buddha that has been worshiped by the people. This is a recommended stone Buddha. Weight: 2.6kg [We mainly sell old Japanese items. We've seen tens of thousands of items so far.
