Japanese antique stone Buddha "Fudo Myoo"/1700-1800/Edo period/Garden ornament
About the Item
This is an old Japanese stone Buddha made in the late Edo period.
This stone Buddha is a Buddha statue called Fudo Myoo.
Fudo Myoo is a Buddhist statue that has been popular in Japan since ancient times, and is said to be the ``guardian deity of warding off epidemics'' and has the power to guide all people and exorcise all disasters.
Fudo Myoo is characterized by an angry expression, and in his right hand he holds a sword that cuts off all doubts in the mind. In his left hand, he holds a rope called ken-saku, which he uses to guide things in the right direction.
He is depicted standing or sitting on a rock. Furthermore, he carries a flame that burns down all obstacles.
Please take a look at the photo of the Fudo Myoo stone Buddha published in the specialized book as a reference material.
And you can see that Fudo Myoo also holds a sword in his right hand and has flames engraved on his back.
Because it has been exposed to the wind and rain for a long time, we cannot see the condition of his left hand, but it is unmistakably the figure of "Fudo Myoo."
This stone Buddha is a cute representation of Fudo Myoo.
It is expressed with about two to three heads, and although it has an angry expression, it has a somewhat charming face.
This kind of expression is very rare.
In order to make it stand on its own, cement is applied to the bottom in two places to make it flat.
However, it still falls down a little easily with just that, so a black support made of clay is included.
It's small so you can place it anywhere.
Why not display it as a symbol of your room or as a talisman?
This is a highly recommended item.
