Italian Giltwood Architectural Fragment
About the Item
This grand piece of moulding once framed an entrance or part of an ecclesiastical structure in a great church.
Classical elements are seen in the rectangular dentil moulding and floral-form beading on the inner moulding. The piece is Italian and made mostly from pine wood, plaster and chalky paint. The paint and gold gilt is completely original.
The piece would make an extraordinary addition to a modern home, as a built-in element, giant headboard or even as a leaning "ruin" in a corner. The great curved arc of the piece is the perfect and unexpected counterpoint to the modern perfection and squareness of most rooms. It can also be placed above a long bookcase or over a long set of doors.
