"Bowl with Female Nudes, " Rare, Striking Art Deco Bowl by Cazaux, French Master

About the Item

Created by Edouard Cazaux, master sculptor and ceramicist who exemplified the French Art Deco style at its best, this small ceramic bowl is ringed by three, sharply-defined female nudes. Cazaux studied at the Beaux Arts School in Sèvres as a young man, and participated in the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which later gave the Art Deco style its name) in 1925, as part of the "Evolution of Style" exhibition in the Arthur Goldscheider pavilion. This bowl is especially rare and important because, during World War II when materials for his usual ceramic work were scarce, he worked with the famed Norton grinding kilns to create sharply-defined pieces like this with an off-white finish. This piece is very well marked on the bottom.
