"Mermaid's Reign, " Art Deco Bowl with Underwater Scene in Emerald Green and Gold

About the Item

Glazed in gorgeous jewel tones, emerald green and sapphire blue, this unique and extraordinary Art Deco bowl was created by an artistic husband-and-wife team in France: Auguste and Odette Chatrousse Heiligenstein. Auguste was sometimes known for the design of elaborate pieces such as this, thus his signature on the bottom, but Odette was known for executing his designs in a gorgeous array of glazes, thus her "OHC" mark, also on the bottom. This scene shows the mermaid queen, her hair floating in the water, holding branches of seaweed and accompanied by several exotic fish. The figures are outlined in gold, another characteristic of Heiligenstein's work.
