Nils Thorsson Royal Copenhagen Aluminia Mid-Century Bowl with Fish

About the Item

Nils Thorsson (Danish, 1898-1975) was a renowned Danish ceramicist and was the leading ceramicist at Royal Copenhagen/Aluminia for around 60 years. Born in Sweden he moved to study in Denmark in 1917. He began work at the Aluminia factory as an apprentice and became its artistic director in the 1920s. He held that position until the late 1960s and was a leading figure in Danish ceramic design, especially for his innovative glazes. He is best known among collectors for his experimentation with glazes. The best of these stoneware pots are among some of the finest Danish ceramics one can find. A stunning hand-crafted Royal Copenhagen Aluminia Danish mid-century brown glazed ceramic bowl of round form decorated with incised fish by Nils Thorsson. The bowl stands raised on a round high foot with and unglazed foot and recessed glazed base and is of wide shallow circular shape with a raised rim with a cut pattern edge. The inner bowl is decorated with an incised pattern of fish swimming towards the centre of the bowl, probably feeding, with a central star shaped motif with trailing patterns extending up to the edge of the bowl. The bowl is decorated in chocolate brown glaze with the pattern having lighter outline shadows from the lighter underlying clay. The bowl has a printed Royal Copenhagen Aluminia mark to the base and is numbered 1585. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
