"Bathers, " Rare Ceramic Dish with Nude Male Figures by Stewart, Laguna Beach

About the Item

A rare and bold "Bathers" piece by Pat and Covey Stewart, this dish is decorated with a pair of nude male bathers in white glaze over a black ground. The Stewarts worked in Laguna Beach, California from 1950-1952, exhibiting at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts and selling their ceramic wares to high-end gift shops and hotel shops across the nation. Pat Stewart, who did the decorating and glazing of "Bathers" pieces, liked to depict nude male figures along the rocky coast where he lived. Most Bathers pieces have a pale background color, so this example with a black ground is much rarer.
