Bob Stocksdale Signed Turned Wood Charger

About the Item

A turned wooden charger by the American woodturner Bob Stocksdale (1913-2003). Round in shape, the charger has a slightly upturned rim. The charger is signed and also marked "Oriental Wood from Australia” to the underside. Born in Warren, Indiana, Stocksdale was raised on his family's farm and began making turned wooden objects, including baseball bats and spindles, as a teenager. During World War II, he was drafted but claimed conscientious objector status and spent the wartime in a conscientious objector camp doing forestry work. It was during this time that Stocksdale turned his first vessel on a lathe. After the war, he moved to Berkley, California and began exhibiting his work. His first solo exhibit took place in 1958 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Stocksdale's works are held in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
