Art Deco Pair of Black, Starr & Gorham Sterling Silver Petal Form Candelabras
About the Item
This exquisite pair of Art Deco sterling silver candelabras was realized in the United States circa 1930. They feature convex circular hand hammered bases with a dappled texture that ascend into a subtly conical bodies. The protuberant base of the body is wrapped with petal forms in relief complete with stylized pistils in their center composed of a cylindrical rod capped with a spherical form. The central stem concludes with a cylindrical hand hammered candleholder with a circular bobeche. Two streamlined swooping arms extend in opposite directions from this central stem with pyramidal voids- replete with foliate detailing in their center- where they adjoin the body of the candelabra. These arms also conclude in dappled, hand hammered candleholders with circular bobeches. With their fastidious attention to detail, clean modernist lines and beautiful craftsmanship, these candleholders promise to add more than a touch of elegance to any table setting regardless of the style of decor. They are in excellent vintage condition. Signed Black, Starr and Frost Gorham Sterling"
The company that was to become Black, Starr & Gorham has its roots in New York at the start of the 19th century. Between approximately 1810 and 1870, it changed hands among several owners who advanced the craft and prestige of the brand. Between 1872 and 1874 Ball, Black & Co was dissolved, following the retirement of senior partners Ball and Moore and the death of William D. Black. The business was taken over by Robert C. Black (son of senior partner William D. Black), Courtland Starr and Aaron V. Frost. Starr and Frost already worked in the company as cashier-bookkeeper and silver department manager respectively. In 1874 the firm was renamed Black Starr & Frost and, from 1908, Black Starr & Frost Inc. In 1876 Black Starr & Frost moved to 251 Fifth Avenue. After the merging with Gorham Corporation the company was renamed Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham Inc. (1929), dating this pair of candelabras to this period. The are approximately 60 ounces.
