Antique Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock by Sevin and Barbedienne

About the Item

This ormolu clock is an exemplary work by the famous French 19th century metalworker and foundry-owner, Ferdiand Barbedienne. Working with a design made by the acclaimed onamentalist, Louis-Constant Sevin, Barbedienne has crafted a magnificent clock, consisting of a central circular dial that is set within an architectural glass and ormolu case. This case is richly decorated with flaming urns, foliage swags and scrollwork, as well as Mannerist style masks. The classical figure of Neptune, God of the Sea, surmounts the clock. He holds a trident, which allows him to control the sea and its creatures, pictured below. Lower down, on a vertical axis with Neptune, there is a wonderful Apollo sun-burst pendulum. This clock is a truly impressive piece of Barbedienne craftsmanship and is signed ‘F. Barbedienne’ to the side.

French sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) is the inspiration for this beautiful, sumptuous mantel clock. His clock, crafted in the late 18th Century and now on display at the Louvre Museum, caused such a stir when it was exhibited over 100 years later, at the Great Exhibition in Paris in 1900 that one reviewer claimed that it "attracted so much admiration from the crowds gathered around that the pressure was sufficient at times to endanger its safety."
