Large Scale Period Louis XIV Boulle Cartel Clock with Matching Plinth/Bracket

About the Item

Grand scale boulle Cartel clock and matching plinth, the ebonized wood case is embellished all-over with gilded bronze mounts (re-gilt). The medallion below the clock dial shows a centaur (half man, half horse) carrying off a young maiden. On top of the clock is a classical winged figure playing a trumpet-like instrument; the inside back of the clock case is also richly worked with tortoiseshell and brass. The gilded brass clock dial is inset with enamel Roman numerals. Below the dial is an enamel cartouche with the late 17th-early 18th century French makers name “Hanet; E.T.U a Paris”. The movement has been replaced with an early English twin barrel movement, (one key wind), and the original key winds on the dial have been plugged. It was not uncommon in the late 18th and 19th century for French clocks that were owned by the English nobility or weatlhy English patrons to replace the French movements in their clocks with what they considered superior English ones. France/England circa early 18th century.
