Bronze Edouard Marcel SANDOZ 1930 "Seated monkey"

About the Item

A FINE AND RARE 'SEATED MONKEY' FIGURE, BY EDOUARD MARCEL SANDOZ, FRENCH He signed on the basis of Ed.M.Sandoz and Susse Fres. Paris, rare find in absolutely magnificent condition, totally original and exceptional, depicting a monkey hugging its tail with grim determination and a beautifully sculpted terrified expression on its face, designed in the purest cubist form, fine hollow casting by Cire Perdue by Susse Fres., Parisian foundry from 1920, finished in gilt and silver bronze, 18cm high. The sculptor Edouard-Marcel Sandoz (1881 - 1971), was born in Basel, Switzerland, on March 21, 1881. After studying chemistry, Sandoz decided to dedicate himself to sculpture. He studied for 3 years at the School of Industrial Arts in Geneva and then moved to Paris, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. He apprenticed with the sculptor Antonin Mercie and the painter Ferdinand Cormon. During World War I, due to a shortage of stone and bronze, Sandoz turned to porcelain for his sculptures and thus began his thirty-year association with the Haviland Limoge company. This collaboration produced many distinctive and highly stylized objects in the form of dogs, cats, rabbits, fish and even hedgehogs made of porcelain with brightly colored glazes. All of his sculptures are characterized by a geometric shape strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. He was elected member of L'Academie de Beaux Arts and commander of L'Order de Legion d'Honneur. Sandoz's sculptures display a unique and lively personal style and place him firmly at the top of the 20th century Animaliers alongside Francois Pompon and Rembrandt Bugatti. He created only a few car mascots, mostly monkeys, and this is one of the rarest of all. Bibliography: Sandos-Sculptor Figuriste et Animalier. LesEditions de L'amateur de Felix Marcilhac, Paris 1993. The mascot is shown on pages 392 and 393, plate 788.
