About the Item

A Bust of Marcus Tulles Cicero, Roman Consul in 63 B.C. completed in ebonized plaster, circa 1880. Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer and philosopher, who served as consul in the year 63 BC. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. (Wikipedia) Provenance: Collection of Brigadier General Alfred Douglas Miller (1864-1933) at 25 Great Cumberland Place, London Acquired by M. Harris & Sons, London, 1928 Purchased from the above and gifted to the Chicago Historical Society, 1933 Displayed in the office of the Mayor of Chicago, circa 1990-present.
