French Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture, by E. Popineau, circa 1920, cymbals dancer. Signed. Also stamped by foundry, la Stele. 36.25" high. 17" wide at hands.
Francois-Emile Popineau (1887-1951)
Popineau was born in 1887 in Saint Amand Montrond, Cher, France. He began using a chisel and a mallet during his teenage years, then perfected his skills in Paris. After World War I he resumed sculpting and taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bourges (where he became an official Bourges Sculptor), then in Rouen. In 1921 he exhibited at the Boutique de l’Encrier in Paris; and was awarded his first gold medal at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern, Decorative and Industrial Arts (Fr: Exhibition Internationale des Arts decoratifs et industriels modernes). He also was awarded the Puvis-de-Chavannes prize for his sculpture La Baigneuse. Popineau’s sculptures are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
