This is a magnificent large antique French bronze lamp depicting the female nude 'Sunset', by the renowned Parisian sculptor Edouard Drout (1859-1945), circa 1890 in date on a stunning antique pedestal, circa 1860 in date. This striking lamp depicts the excellently executed patinated bronze female nude figure of 'Sunset' who is standing tall graciously with her arms stretched out, slightly bending backwards with her beautiful head turning left, her eyes candidly closed, and the splendid long hair flowing around. She is holding a distinctive flaming glass torch over her head - hence, representing the golden light seen in a sunset. As a Goddess, she stands divinely above the sun, which is also exquisitely captured with its rays spreading - immortalising the moment when evening commences. It stands on a splendid rouge marble base of unusual and desirable shaped square form, and bears the artist's signature 'E. Drout' at the back. This high-quality bronze figure was produced by using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method The fine antique French fruitwood and ormolu mounted freestanding pedestal, dates from circa 1860. The "Marmo di Brescia"rouge marble revolving top features an ormolou acanthus bands supporting by a circular fluted collared bronze dressed column set with foliate cannellures and raised on a plinth base. The top section revolves so that you can display your statue or bronze at different angles. Add a classic French element to your home with this lovely bronze lamp on a pedestal. Solar deities and sun worship can be found throughout most of recorded history in various forms. Édouard Drouot was a French artist best known for his bronze and marble sculptures of mythological and allegorical scenes. At times creating animalier and Orientalist works, Drouot’s sculptures, whether of animals or people, are characterized by a sense of movement and expressive touch. Born on April 3, 1859 in Sommevoire, France, he went on to study under the popular artist Mathurin Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1889 onward. Today, Drouot’s work can be found in the collections of the Courtauld Institute in London and the Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, among others. The artist died in 1945 in Paris, France. Lost Wax Method - sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture. In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
