Mexican Ceramic Skull Sculpture Handcrafted Folk Art, Edition 1/30
About the Item
Imagine a drink only drunk in weddings between royalty, accompanying the dead in their transit to the underworld, and celebrating military victories or successful commercial expeditions…This is the source of Mexican ceramist Omar Hernadez’s interest in cacao and its role in Mesoamerican culture. While today it’s a traditional drink, in prehispanic culture chocolate wasn’t within the reach of the common person. If only the dead lived today.
-Materials and technique-
By using fine white and Oaxacan Donaji clay, Omar creates authentic reproductions of Mexican native cacao cobs (mazorcas de cacao criollo) in ceramic.
Omar uses natural pigments from soil minerals & oxides to decorate each piece. He finds these in the different types of soil near his house in the Central Valley of Oaxaca and in the Mixtec Region on his routine walks. He says, “Sometimes I stop in the highway to collect a bit of soil when I see a beautiful color. We just find each other on the way!”

- Mexican Handmade Ceramic Skull Sculpture Collection Made in Limited EditionsBy Omar HernándezLocated in Queretaro, Queretaro"As a Mexican and Oaxacan, but more as Omar, I see death as something present. It´s something that is a part of life and when you think about death, you begin to value a lot of things. Death is important to me because it’s a constant threat. If you think about dying now, you would probably do things that in another moment you would say, “I’ll do it later.” I see death as an opportunity to live a better life...a continuation of something," says Mexican ceramist Omar Hernández. Omar Hernandez is a Mexican ceramist born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. As a child, growing up in a family of potters he didn't have much interest in making pottery, but in his early 20's he realized he could do other things with clay that weren't necessarily utilitarian pieces. It was then that Omar started his skull...Category
