Orestes Dequel, Female figure, bronze sculpture

About the Item

Oreste Dequel Koper, 1923 - Rome, 1985 Figura femminile Bronze sculpture, 20x30x10 cm engraved signature on the back "Dequel" In excellent overall condition, an object of great charm. Orestes Dequel was born on August 17, 1923, in Koper. Already a teenager, he began to draw and show his artistic talent, confirmed by the award for the work of the "Jazz Orchestra" at one of the local art competitions in 1937 in Trieste, Italy. As a young man he took part in the national liberation struggle during World War II, and after the war he received a state grant from the Yugoslav state to study at the new Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where he completed his studies. In 1952 he contributed to the creation of France Prešeren's monumental Smerdu statue in Kranj. After his studies, he returned to his native Koper and moved to Italy in 1956. He made a series of bronze plastics in Koper, unfortunately lost. In 1953 he was given a major project, the execution of a bust of the Bishop of Koper, Peter Pavel Vergeri Jr. which still adorns Vergeri Square in the city. At the same time, the authorities commissioned him to create the monumental three-meter sculpture "Fallen Sailor," which stands in the park in front of Isola Cemetery. During the Trieste period Dequel made a series of sculptures with which he presented himself in 1959 at his first solo exhibition in Trieste. In the same year he moved to Rome, where between 1960 and 1984 he made most of the works that would bring him success and participation in numerous exhibitions in major Italian cities.
