About the Item

A remarkable depiction of a strong, muscled nude male figure bent over in a monumental effort to move a large stone, this sculpture was made by the Hungarian-American sculptor Henry Schoenbauer. By the 1920s, many sculptors had created some version of "Man Against Nature," typically a an exaggeratedly strong male figure, often nude, working to lift a rock, pull a rope, or labor against impossible odds. Schoenbauer's "Stone Lifter" may be the most powerful and exaggerated of its kind, his figure hyper-muscled, his legs splayed, and his entire body straining and stretching to move an enormously heavy object. After immigrating to America from Hungary, Schoenbauer studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art. To our knowledge, this sculpture is only one of two that exist in this large size. The medium is plaster or composite finished in a dark green, bronze patina.
