Pair of African Iron Bandaka Hoe Currency, Mounted on Custom Steel Bases
About the Item
2 African iron Bandaka hoe currency, Mabila and Chamba Peoples, Nigeria and Cameroon.
The iron, hammered into the form of a hoe, was used as currency. Mounted they are wonderful pieces of hand crafted sculpture steeped in culture and history. I find these so evocative, they have the practical use of currency and are such beautiful objects of art. Mounted and they are they resemble floating jellyfish, or whatever comes to mind. Each with its own personality, the one with a rust colored patina the other darker, the hand hammering evident on the surfaces, they compliment each other wonderfully.

These whippets are resonant of the early nineteenth-century work of Thomas Weeks (d. 1834) who established a 'Royal Mechanical Museum' or emporium in Tichbourne Street in about 1797. The attractions included various animated animals and insects, ingenious clocks, musical instruments, elaborate temples, toys and other such peculiarities that appealed to the London public in the late 18th and early 19th Century (C.
