18th Century, Dutch Delft Drug Jar Rose Smell
About the Item
Fine dutch delft 18th century drug jar. The jar of ovoid form with rolled top rim and tapered body down to the circular flat foot rim, decorated with opposing peacocks surmounting a cartouche reading ROOSE.REUK with a cherub below and multiple florets of flowers and scroll work. The base signed by the painter in blue.
Notes Roose.Reuk translates to rose smell. Delftware is a type of tin glazed blue and white pottery that was produced from the 16th century onwards. The tin glazing confers a smooth white opaque finish that gives the pottery its characteristic lustre and feel while the blue comes from cobalt oxide. The ornate cartouches on Delft drug jars describe the substances commonly prescribed from Chemist shops right up to the 19th century. Chemists would have rows often numbering up to 100 on display and in everyday use. Roses are thought to bring many healing properties such as speeding up the healing time of a wound to regulate excessive sweating.
