Large French Apothecary Jar Digitalis

About the Item

Here is a beautiful and large French apothecary jar by Limoges. It features an intricate painted design and was for storing “Digitalis”, a genus of flowering plants in the family Plantaginaceae. Measures approx. 12”H More information on Digitalis: It is commonly known as foxglove and encompasses several species, including Digitalis purpurea, which is the most well-known and widely cultivated species. Digitalis plants are native to Europe, but they are also grown in other regions around the world as ornamental plants. They are known for their tall flower spikes, usually covered in tubular flowers that can range in color from white and yellow to various shades of pink, purple, and magenta. One of the notable characteristics of Digitalis plants is that they contain cardiac glycosides, a group of compounds that can have a powerful effect on the heart. These compounds, including digitoxin and digoxin, have been used in medicine to treat certain heart conditions. However, it is important to note that digitalis plants and their extracts are toxic and should not be consumed without proper medical supervision. More information on French apothecary jars: These jars were traditionally used in pharmacies and apothecaries to store and display various medicinal substances and herbs. They are typically made of high-quality porcelain and often feature intricate hand-painted designs, labels, and decorative elements. The French porcelain apothecary pharmacy jars come in different shapes and sizes, with each jar typically labeled with the name of the substance it once contained. The labels are often written in French and can provide insight into the historical uses of the substances stored in the jars. These jars have a rich history and are valued for their beauty, craftsmanship, and historical significance. They are popular among collectors, antique enthusiasts, and those interested in medical history.
