Colourful Famille Noire Japanese Meiji Period Temple Jar - Yamatoku Kiln

About the Item

A bold 'famille noire' style porcelain temple jar. Handcrafted in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, towards the end of the Meiji period. The little porcelain temple jar is hand-painted with a landscape of flowering peony blossoms and sakura trees. Coloured and illustrated in vibrant shades of turquoise, mint green, and pink. This intricate floral image is presented against a deep black backdrop, which brings the tones to life and creates a wonderful compositional impact. This decorative porcelain piece is credited to the 'Yamatoku Kiln'. The Yamatoku Kiln was known for its brightly coloured porcelain pieces, which were produced between 1868 and 1912. Temple jars initially served their purpose in Bhuddist temples, but are nowadays now valued and displayed for their remarkable beauty and craftsmanship.
