"Dancing Satyr, " Rare/Unique Art Deco Vase by Trenton Potteries

About the Item

To our knowledge, this remarkable vase -- produced by the famed Trenton Potteries Company in the 1930s -- is unique. Starting with a simple blue ceramic vase, the artist etched a dancing satyr figure, playing the panpipe, into the surface, and then added a deep golden brown glaze to the figure. The effect is charming and lively. Trenton, New Jersey had been a major center for pottery and porcelain production for decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Lenox Porcelain. In the 1920s, there were over 50 companies, and among the largest was the Trenton Potteries Company, formed in the 1890s by the merger of Crescent, Delaware, Empire, Enterprise and Equitable companies.
