Early 18th Century Blue and White Dutch Delft Clobbered Vase

About the Item

A blue and white Dutch delft vase made circa 1700, with clobbered-style polychrome enamels added in the mid-18th century. This brightly colored blue and white Dutch delft vase is a testament to the Western appreciation of and quest for Chinese porcelain. The recipe for porcelain was a mystery in Europe until well into the 18th century. Chinese porcelains held great status as works of art and were exported to the West in huge quantities. At the same time, European factories created their own wares to emulate the Chinese blue and white pieces. Delft, or tin-glazed earthenware, was the Netherlands's response to blue and white porcelain. What is especially interesting about this particular Dutch delft vase, however, is its decoration. The overglaze polychrome enamels reference "clobbered" china, or blue and white Chinese export porcelains which were later decorated in Europe with overglaze polychrome accents. While the vase is clearly earthenware, not porcelain, the high status of Chinese wares in that society is obvious in its emulation of style, motifs, and treatment. A faux reign mark completes the allusion to Chinese porcelain. Dimensions: 14 in. H x 7 in. Dm at the widest point (35.5 cm H x 17.8 cm Dm) Condition: Very good. Attractive craquelure all over. A Wedgwood jardiniere with lilac and sage details on a white jasperware ground. Jasperware is perhaps the quintessential Wedgwood clay body and is even considered by some to be a ceramic development on par with porcelain. Originally developed in the 1770s as dyed stoneware bodies (the most ubiquitous of which is pale blue) with applied white figurative decoration in imitation of cameos from the Ancient World, jasperware quickly expanded to a plethora of colorways as per Wedgwood innovation standards. This jardiniere, with lilac and sage decoration on white jasperware ground, is part of Wedgwood’s tricolor jasperware...

  • 18th Century Dutch Polychrome Delft Baluster Form Vase
    Located in Dallas, TX
This hand-painted Delft vase was produced in the Netherlands in the 1700’s. Delft is a city in the western part of the Netherlands that is world-renowned for ceramic pieces. As a home port of the Dutch East India Company, Delft was at the forefront of producing faience wares, which were influenced by imported Chinese porcelain. The prototypical Delftware has a white background with hand-painted cobalt blue imagery, though they can also be found in multi-colored or “polychrome” variations, such as ours. Our baluster form vase has a hand painted scene depicting a woman in a flowing dress walking across a field. The scene is surrounded by flowers, curled leaves, and a diapered background with flowering vine offshoots. On the opposite side of the baluster is a large flowering vine. The lid has a rural life cartouche that is painted with a scene depicting a farm overlooking a field or body of water . The handle of the lid has a similarly colored bird perched on a sinuous branch, while pecking at a berry. This particular design was seen on many delft baluster...
